Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: Which Is Right for You?

You got the tree removed — great. But now there's an ugly stump sitting in your yard. It's a tripping hazard, it attracts termites, and it makes mowing a pain. You've got two options: stump grinding or full stump removal. Here's how to decide.

Stump Grinding

Stump grinding uses a specialized machine to chip the stump down to 6-12 inches below ground level. The grinding produces wood chips that can be used as mulch or hauled away.

Pros:

  • Faster — most stumps take 30-60 minutes
  • Less expensive — typically $150-$400
  • Less disruptive to your yard
  • Wood chips can be reused as mulch

Cons:

  • Roots remain underground and decompose over time
  • Some tree species may sprout new growth from remaining roots
  • Not ideal if you plan to build on the exact spot

Full Stump Removal

Full removal means digging out the entire stump and major root system. This is a bigger job that requires heavy equipment.

Pros:

  • Complete removal — no roots left behind
  • Ideal for construction or hardscaping projects
  • No chance of regrowth

Cons:

  • More expensive — $500-$1,000+
  • Leaves a large hole that needs filling
  • More disruptive to surrounding landscape

Our Recommendation

For most Tampa Bay homeowners, stump grinding is the way to go. It's faster, cheaper, and gets the job done. We only recommend full removal if you're planning construction or the stump is in a location where regrowth would be a problem.
